TORRINGTON — The Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Auxiliary is featuring the local photographs of James R. Roche Jr. now through early February in the hospital’s main lobby hallway, 540 Litchfield Street, Torrington.
The public is invited to view and buy the works during regular visiting hours as part of the Auxiliary’s ongoing “Artist of the Month” program. A portion of the proceeds from sales of the artwork support the CHH Auxiliary and Charlotte Hungerford Hospital.
Roche said he appreciates “Life’s simple beauty,” and has tried to capture those types of images throughout his life, starting with drawing and painting, then film, photography, and digital photography. Now retired, he said he has the opportunity to share his visual experiences with others, and tries to capture images of the world around him no matter how insignificant they may seem or what the subject may be.
Many photos are a “picture within a picture” where a small portion of the photo is zoomed into, making another image entirely. Candid photos are a particular favorite, he said, such as Zamboniman” and “The Driver”, which were taken at a moment in time that will never be again.

The Auxiliary’s “Artist of the Month” program has been featuring paintings, photographs, and artwork each month from local artists for over 25 years. The more than 200 member supporters assist in raising money for the hospital through dues, donations, volunteering at the gift shop, and a variety of events including an annual fall fashion show and luncheon.
