Local students named to dean’s list at University at Albany
ALBANY, N.Y. — The following local students have been named to the fall 2017 dean’s list at the University at Albany: Taylor Casey of Winsted and Christina Schiappa of Burlington.
Local students make dean’s list at Hofstra
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — Hofstra University congratulates local students named to the fall 2017 dean’s list: Kaitlyn Carrozzo of New Hartford; Olivia Defiore of Litchfield; Gillian Greene of Thomaston; Matthew Pivarnik of Woodbury and Nejad Abo Hamzy of Thomaston.
Students named to Marist College dean’s list

Atkinson receives NASA scholarship
WILLIMANTIC — Lauren Atkinson ‘18 of Harwinton is one of 28 graduate or undergraduate students across Connecticut to receive a summer research fellowship from the NASA Connecticut Space Grant Consortium. Atkinson is using the scholarship to support her research titled “Evaluating the Scorpion Microbiome for Diversity and Antibiotic Production.” Atkinson’s major is biology at Eastern Connecticut State University.
Atkinson and Biology Professor Barbara Murdoch are testing bacteria naturally found in the abdomens of scorpions for their ability to produce antibiotics. Their focus on finding new antibiotics is due to the rising threat of antimicrobial resistance. Antimicrobial resistance is the ability of a microbe, such as a virus, bacterium or fungus, to resist drugs that had been useful in treating them.

ORONO, Maine — The University of Maine recognized 2,229 students for achieving dean’s list honors in the fall 2017 semester. Of the students who made the Dean’s List, 1,609 are from Maine, 559 are from 32 other states and 61 are from 27 countries other than the U.S.
