-

TORRINGTON — On Sunday, SpeakEasy welcomes the multitalented Joan Kunsch as its featured reader.

Kunsch is a writer and the associate artistic director and national audition co-director of the Nutmeg Ballet conservatory, headquartered in Torrington.

The poetry/spoken word series SpeakEasy takes place on the first Sunday of every month at the Noelke Gallery at 15 Water St. in downtown Torrington.

Open mic signup begins at 6:30 p.m., and the event runs from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Hosted by writer Patricia Martin, SpeakEasy showcases poetry, essays, memoirs, storytelling, monologues, and other spokenword.

Each event spotlights a guest feature poet/writer, and provides five-minute open mic slots for other voices to be heard. And all ages are welcome; snacks are available and BYOB. Suggested donation is $5.

Kunsch has just returned from a cross-country trek recruiting new talent for The Nutmeg Ballet. “The trip entailed 25 takeoffs and landings, 17 cities, 12 hotels, five private homes, and about 262 dancers,” Kunsch said. “It is such a joyous thing to call Nutmeg Ballet

Conservatory my artistic home in dance. … And now Speakeasy joins that, in my feeling of gratitude for having a local and regular poetry ‘home.’ ”

“Joan has boundless energy, wit, and style,” Martin said. “She is a creative powerhouse with such a wonderful voice and grace, and is so beloved by many — for good reason. It is truly an honor to feature her at the March SpeakEasy.”
