CORNWALL — Mohawk Mountain Ski Area’s annual Firefighter Race took place Sunday at the ski resort in Cornwall, drawing firefighters in their gear for a day of skiing the slopes, all to benefit the Connecticut Burn Center at Bridgeport Hospital.

The eighth annual race was rescheduled from Feb. 25. Eight teams of five firefighters each competed for prizes, enjoyed a barbecue lunch and received a commemorative T-shirt.

Wearing full gear, each team made their way down a slope, holding a length of fire hose between them.

The first-place winner was Danbury Fire Department team, which made it down the slope in 21.93 seconds. Second place was Meriden, with 23.47 seconds, and third place was East Granby’s fire department, in 25.91 seconds.

In fourth place was Pleasant Valley Fire Department; Kent Volunteer Fire Department, fifth place; Avon Fire Department, sixth place; and Meriden Fire Team 2 in seventh place.

The teams raised $1,500 for the burn center, according to group sales coordinater Tom Mitchell at Mohawk Mountain.
