Events planned for Sexual Assault Awareness Month
TORRINGTON — April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and the Susan B. Anthony Project is hosting events to honor survivors and bring awareness to the community.
A Sexual Assault Awareness Month vigil is scheduled at Coe Memorial Park at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 26.
The “Clothesline Project”, which features t-shirts designed by survivors, will be on display at the April 28 vigil and throughout the month at the Goshen Public Library, Northwestern Community College and the Susan B. Anthony Project office, as well as online at www.sbaproject.org.
Faces of Survival, a photo exhibition of victims and survivors of sexual violence who have chosen to break the silence and tell their stories of survival, will be on display April 23-27 in the library at Northwestern CT Community College in Winsted.
Research indicates over the course of their lifetime, 18 percent of women in this country are raped, and 1 in 5 Connecticut residents are sexually assaulted. According to the United States Bureau of Justice Statistics, individuals age 12 or older experienced an estimated 222,000 rapes or sexual assaults in 2008.
Susan B. Anthony Project provides free services and educational programs to schools, churches, civic groups and area agencies/ businesses.
