UConn trio Williams, Nurse and Stevens will attend draft

- By Jim Fuller

Former UConn stars Kia Nurse, Azurá Stevens and Gabby Williams are among 10 players slated to be in attendance at the April 12 WNBA Draft.

All three could be taken in the first 10 picks, which would mark the third time that three former Huskies were selected in the first round in the same WNBA Draft.

South Carolina’s A’ja Wilson, expected to be the first overall pick, will be joined by the UCLA duo of Monique Billings and Jordin Canada, Lexie Brown of Duke, former North Carolina and Tennessee star Diamond DeShields, Kelsey Mitchell of Ohio State, and Mississippi State’s Victoria Vivians.

In a recent Associated Press mock draft, which included input from some of the league’s coaches and general managers, Stevens, Williams and Nurse were predicted to be taken with picks No. 4, 6 and 9.

The draft will be held on April 12 at the Nike New York Headquarters.

ESPN2 will air the first round at 7 p.m. followed by coverage of the second and third rounds on ESPNU at 8 p.m.

The draft will also stream live on the ESPN app.

UConn made history in 2002 when Sue Bird, Swin Cash, Asjha Jones and Tamika Williams were among the top six picks.

In 2016, Breanna Stewart, Moriah Jefferson and Morgan Tuck were the top three selections.

Las Vegas has the No. 1 pick while the Connecticut Sun pick ninth.
