Bond commission OKs OWTS funding
TORRINGTON — State Rep. Michelle Cook (D-Torrington) announced the state Bond Commission’s approval on Friday of $160,000 in bonding for repairs and infrastructure updates at Oliver Wolcott Technical High School in Torrington.
“All of this funding is going toward sensible improvements and repairs that keep our students safe and the facility in good shape,” Cook said in a statement. “We are still in line for funding to build a new technical high school, but in the meantime we must ensure that the present building is safe for students and code compliant. Torrington students benefit greatly from having access to the unique educational opportunities a technical high school offers right in our own backyard. I’m glad to see the state’s continued support for schools like Oliver Wolcott that prepare our students with the skills in demand by Connecticut employers.”
Rep. Cook continues to work with community leaders on plans to secure funding to build a new technical high school. According to the state Department of Education, the $160,000 is budgeted for the following projects: $80,000 for fire alarm panel replacements; $45,000 for HVAC roof unit replacement; $20,000 for boiler expansion tank replacement; $15,000 for roof repair.
The bonding was approved unanimously at Friday’s Bond Commission meeting. Monday-Friday, from July 2 through August 17 9 a.m-4 p.m, with the option of Before Care and/or After Care for an additional fee.
