Bond com­mis­sion OKs OWTS fund­ing

TOR­RING­TON — State Rep. Michelle Cook (D-Tor­ring­ton) an­nounced the state Bond Com­mis­sion’s ap­proval on Fri­day of $160,000 in bond­ing for re­pairs and in­fra­struc­ture up­dates at Oliver Wol­cott Tech­ni­cal High School in Tor­ring­ton.

“All of this fund­ing is go­ing to­ward sen­si­ble im­prove­ments and re­pairs that keep our stu­dents safe and the fa­cil­ity in good shape,” Cook said in a state­ment. “We are still in line for fund­ing to build a new tech­ni­cal high school, but in the mean­time we must en­sure that the present build­ing is safe for stu­dents and code com­pli­ant. Tor­ring­ton stu­dents ben­e­fit greatly from hav­ing ac­cess to the unique ed­u­ca­tional op­por­tu­ni­ties a tech­ni­cal high school of­fers right in our own back­yard. I’m glad to see the state’s con­tin­ued sup­port for schools like Oliver Wol­cott that pre­pare our stu­dents with the skills in de­mand by Con­necti­cut em­ploy­ers.”

Rep. Cook con­tin­ues to work with community lead­ers on plans to se­cure fund­ing to build a new tech­ni­cal high school. Ac­cord­ing to the state Depart­ment of Ed­u­ca­tion, the $160,000 is bud­geted for the fol­low­ing projects: $80,000 for fire alarm panel re­place­ments; $45,000 for HVAC roof unit re­place­ment; $20,000 for boiler ex­pan­sion tank re­place­ment; $15,000 for roof re­pair.

The bond­ing was ap­proved unan­i­mously at Fri­day’s Bond Com­mis­sion meet­ing. Mon­day-Fri­day, from July 2 through Au­gust 17 9 a.m-4 p.m, with the op­tion of Be­fore Care and/or Af­ter Care for an ad­di­tional fee.

There are sev­eral pack­ages avail­able to meet the vary­ing needs of par­tic­i­pants and fam­i­lies. Fam­i­lies can sign up for two week ses­sions of camp or se­lect a pack­age that cov­ers the whole sum­mer. Each two week ses­sion in­cludes all ac­tiv­i­ties, vis­its to the mu­nic­i­pal pool, and field trips to var­ied des­ti­na­tions. Daily ac­tiv­i­ties will in­clude arts and crafts, sports, group games, on­site vis­its from lo­cal or­ga­ni­za­tions, vis­its to the mu­nic­i­pal pool and other ac­tiv­i­ties. Weekly field trips will fea­ture vis­its to Lake Com­pounce, State Parks, Quassy Water­park, and more.
