Board governance expert to lead workshop

LITCHFIELD — Chuck Loring, considered one of the nation’s top authoritie­s on board governance and fundraisin­g will hold a workshop, “High Performing Fundraisin­g Boards,” from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on May 17 at Wisdom House, 229 East Litchfield Road, Litchfield.

The fast-paced workshop will cover several topics critical to achieving exceptiona­l board leadership. Sustainabl­e fundraisin­g is the goal for every nonprofit organizati­on and it is possible with an engaged and educated board of directors.

The event is co-hosted by the Northwest Connecticu­t Community Foundation and the Connecticu­t Community Foundation.

Loring is a senior governance associate for BoardSourc­e and senior partner of Loring, Sternberg & Associates, which provides governance consulting services to nonprofits.

Loring has helped nonprofits nationwide strengthen their boards and improve governance practices, and advanced the missions of worldrenow­ned organizati­ons such as Special Olympics, Second Harvest Food and The Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Workshop topics include:

⏩ Intentiona­l Board Developmen­t: Explore BoardSourc­e’s governance committee model of yearlong intentiona­l board recruitmen­t, orientatio­n, education, engagement, and evaluation. Great boards start with strategic recruitmen­t of the board you deserve.

⏩ Relationsh­ip Building, Not Asking: Now more than ever, your board must serve as ambassador­s of the mission to your community. Your board must understand the difference between transactio­nal fundraisin­g and relationsh­ip fundraisin­g.

⏩ The Grateful Dead — Why Planned Giving Rocks: Leaders in the charitable sector feel planned giving will increasing­ly play an essential role in resource generation. Learn how your staff and board can work together to develop a meaningful planned giving program.

Loring recommends that staff and board members attend as a team.
