Women in science focus of seminar at NVCC on Friday
WATERBURY — Like science? Considering pursuing an education or career in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) disciplines? Naugatuck Valley Community College will host the Scott Lawrence Pond Memorial Women in Science Seminar at 11 a.m. Friday in Ekstrom Hall, Room 440. .
The seminar provides a yearly forum in which local women scientists share perspectives and experiences about the journeys each has undertaken to get where they are . NVCC students and about 30 local high school girls will attend to learn more about STEM career paths. The public is invited to register for the free event by calling 203-596-2175.
“We have come a long way from the times when women were kept out of the science classroom and laboratories,” NVCC President Daisy Cocco De Filippis. said. “How wonderful to see our generous faculty — women and men — nurture and support the education of women in the sciences at NVCC. Bravi!”
A brief luncheon will follow. Speakers include Jessica McGuire, Great American Aquaculture; Christina Ruddy, chiropractor, Carbone Chiropractic Center; Carla Niederhofer, director of product development, Fuel Cell Energy, Inc.; Robin Ganter, student, Yale School of Nursing, and Liz Mendonca, production manager, Hubbard Hall, Inc.
The event is sponsored by the Scott Lawrence Pond Memorial Fund through the NVCC Foundation.
Bank offers annual scholarship program
LAKEVILLE — Salisbury Bank is offering its annual Time to Shine scholarships, created in 2009 to assist students in financial need and who are making a difference in their communities. Multiple scholarships may be awarded in the amount of $2,500 each to assist eligible students seeking a college degree
Eligible students must be residents of Litchfield, Berkshire, Columbia, Dutchess, Orange or Ulster counties, and must be currently enrolled in a public high school, vocational, technical, or private school; be a homeschool student affiliated with such a school; or be a graduate or GED recipient entering their first year of college.
Applicants must be planning to enter an accredited college or university as a first-year undergraduate for the 2018/2019 academic year. Applicants will be evaluated according to a 100-point system that takes into account financial need; academic achievement; community service; volunteerism; and leadership. The top scorers will also be interviewed by the Bbank’s Scholarship Committee.

Nature center to host program on birds
WOODBURY — Ever wonder which birds fly south from Connecticut and where they go? Which birds fly south to north? Which ones overwinter here in Connecticut and what they need to survive the season?
Jane Seymour, a Connecticut DEEP wildlife biologist, will provide insight into these and other questions related to Connecticut birds and their migration habits at 9 a.m. Saturday at Flanders Nature Center.
She will discuss some of the threats facing birds and how people can help. After the talk, there will be a short walk of the Van Vleck property to identify various bird species, weather permitting.
The program will take place in the Flanders’ Studio, on the corner of Flanders Road and Church Hill Road in Woodbury.

Grant deadlines set for applicants
SHEFFIELD, MA — Regional nonprofits, students and schools in Northwest Litchfield County are invited to apply for grants and scholarships from the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation during the spring grants cycle, from April through June.
Nonprofit board chairs or vice chairs in the region may apply for a scholarship to attend Harvard Business School’s Governing for Nonprofit Excellence program, a four-day course designed to enhance leadership and governance skills. The value of the program is $4,750. Applications are due May 1.
The Arts Fund for Region One provides scholarships to students from Cornwall, Falls Village, Kent, North Canaan, Salisbury or Sharon who are interested in arts-related programs. Grants of up to $500 will be awarded. Applications are due May 1.
⏩ The Tabor Foundation Fund supports residents of northwest Litchfield County and northeast Dutchess County who plan to undertake education or training in a health care or medical field and to seek employment afterward. Nonresidents who work in the area may also apply. Grants of up to $4,000 will be awarded. Applications are due June 30.
The Region One Athletic Fund helps athletes in the school district compete in their chosen sport or physical activity. Funding is available for individuals and projects. Grants of up to $500 will be awarded. Applications are due May 1.
