ATF: Man made fully automatic weapon at home

- By Leslie Hutchison

TORRINGTON — A city man is facing charges for allegedly manufacturing an automatic weapon in his home, according to an affidavit released Friday.

According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Sean Dey, 39, of West Street, made a fully automatic machine gun called a Commando and sold it for $1,500.

The gun transaction was undertaken by a “cooperative source,” according to the affidavit, who contacted Dey on March 29, telling him he wanted one of those “things.”

Dey replied he had enough parts to make two guns, the affidavit reads.

Dey and the source agreed to meet at 10 p.m. on April 3 in the parking lot of a UPS building at 1010 Honeyspot Road in Stratford.

ATF Agent Michael Oppenheim outfitted the source with a hidden video and audio recorder and audio transmitter, according to the affidavit.

Dey was arrested on April 10 and charged with knowing possession of a machine gun, receipt or possession of an unregistered firearm, making a firearm and receipt or possession of a firearm unidentified by a serial number. He is represented by attorney James Maguire, of New Haven. Maguire did not return a call for comment.

A probable cause hearing is scheduled for Dey on May 30 at noon at the United States District Court in Bridgeport. The prosecutor is Assistant U.S. Attorney Rahul Kale. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in New Haven declined to comment on the case.
