Kids can be Farmer for a Day

-

WOODBURY — Flanders is offering a program for young children with a caregiver where they can be “a farmer for the day” visiting, learning and helping feed the animals that make their home at the Flanders North Barn. Held on the first Friday in the months of May and June the focus will be on a different farm animal with each program including an art project, story, walk or puppet show to create an exciting agriculture adventure together according to a press release from organizers.

Goats are the theme of the Farm School Day being held on Friday.

The Nigerian dwarf dairy goats will have new kids jumping about and playing to entertain you. We will learn about products made from goat’s milk and have a goat milking demonstration. Be prepared to take a hike with goats as we watch them dine on leaves…even invasive plants and poison ivy. A Van-goat art project to take home is included with your farming adventure learning all about goats!

On June 1, the theme is Baa, Ram, Ewe!

Sheep have roamed the Van Vleck farm for years. Come and learn about our Shetland sheep and feel the beautiful, soft wool we use for knitting and felting. Participants will have a hands on experience to use some wool for an art project to take home. Learn how a shepherd takes care of their sheep and listen to a fun story about these wooly wonders!

The programs start at 9:30 a.m., last for an hour and will be based at the Flanders North Barn located at 644 Flanders Road in Woodbury.

Pre-registration is required. The cost is $5 for child and caregiver for those who are Flanders members and $10 for non-members. Those interested may register online at www.flandersnaturecenter.org or call 203-263-3711, ext. 10, forinformation.
