Walter Camp tournament returning on May 14
The Walter Camp Football Foundation is resurrecting its charity golf tournament after a decade-long absence
The Walter Camp Celebrity Golf Classic will be held May 14 at the Course at Yale.
The tournament is already sold out, according to Walter Camp president Mike Madera.
“Quite frankly, this was our signature event for a long time. We lost our major sponsor (in 2008),” Madera said. “This is good for our foundation and the community to have it back. We are starting slow per say this year, but we expect to have it bigger and better again.”
The tournament almost came back last year, but the organization’s efforts were fully focused on finding a new place to host the All-American dinner in January.
Yale University’s Lanman Center hosted the event for the first time while the Yale Commons is currently under construction.
The golf tournament will feature 32 foursomes and there is a waiting list.
Among the celebrities expected to tee it up include former NFL football players Herschel Walker, David Fulcher and Dan Orlovsky and former coach Kevin Gilbride, also the former head coach at Southern Connecticut State University.
“When the tournament lost its major sponsor, it wasn’t feasible to do,” said Madera, now in his second and final year as president. “When we started this process again, it was going to be small, welcome back sort of thing, but now we have 32 foursomes. We are doing a ring ceremony (for Walker). It’s going to be a fantastic event.”
The shotgun start is at 11:30 a.m.
Although no spots are currently available, people can still sponsor tee signs, carts and other things.
“To me, it’s a New-Haven based organization so why not keep it in the area at one of the top courses around.
“Yale’s been great, it’s not a course everyone can play (Yale is semi-private). We’re giving (the golfers) something they can’t normally get,” Madera said.
