CIAC releases divisions, process for 2018-19

- Staff Reports

The CIAC boys basketball state tournament’s five divisions are virtually set for the 2018-19 season.

In a statement released on Wednesday afternoon, the CIAC divulged its transparent process of how the 183 schools that have the sport will be ranked for the upcoming season.

Certain criteria was used by the CIAC boys basketball committee, with approval from the CIAC Board of Controls.

The criteria is as follows: each school’s boys’ enrollment from the previous year (in this case, the current school year); success in league play during the season over a three-year period; and success in CIAC tournament over a threeyear period, but only for teams that have at least 25 male students attending from beyond its geographical district.

So once the formula was created, the teams were ranked.

There are now 20 teams in Division I, 36 in Division II, 38 in Division III, 40 in Division IV and 49 in Division V.

There will be no appeals process. Teams can only opt up to play in Division I. Teams need to decide that by Sept. 1.

The only changes in Division I are as follows: Immaculate, last season’s Division II champion, and Simsbury are now in Division I while Crosby, Kennedy and Northwest Catholic have moved to Division II. Kolbe Cathedral, last season’s Division IV champ, is also in Division II, as is Division III winner Waterford. Division V winner Cromwell is now in Division IV.
