Elks did a great job hosting free-throw contest
Our two grandsons, Will and Carl Parkhouse, competed recently in the Elks “Hoop Shoot” Free Throw Contest. Contestants must win a local, district, state and regional (all of New England) competition in order to qualify for the National event held in Chicago.
Will, 11, has been the state champion the last three years and went to the National event two years ago finishing fifth. His brother Carl, 9, won the New England Regional competition this year and also finished fifth at the Nationals.
As proud as we are of our boys and their parents, Matthew and Erin Parkhouse of Torrington, our applause goes out today to the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Will and Carl represented the Torrington Elks Lodge 372 proudly, but it was the manner in which this event was held at all levels that draws our praise and appreciation.
Every event was staffed by Elks members who gave of their time to make this the well run competition that it is. All the contestants were treated fairly and respectfully.
Our grandsons came out of this experience with pride in themselves and having the opportunity to meet other kids from all across the country. The Elks started this event in 1946 and have made many improvements to it over the years. Millions of boys and girls ages 8 to 13 compete nationwide.
The mission of the Elks is to “Build stronger communities.” Our family can attest to the fact that this event, sponsored and run by the Elks, has certainly fulfilled that mission. Roger & Mary Parkhouse, Warren
