Woman wins $3M after stop at package store

- By Jim Shay

Going to a Torrington package store and buying a CT Lottery ticket has definitely left a woman in good spirits.

That’s because her winning ticket was worth $3 million.

On Friday, Mary Clancey claimed her big prize at CT Lottery headquarters in Rocky Hill.

And because Clancey laid down an extra buck for a Megaplier, her $1 million was tripled to $3 million.

Clancey bought her Mega Millions ticket at The Cork Fine Wine and Spirits at 1597 Main St. in downtown Torrington. The store’s owner, Sarah Gursky, said it was The Cork’s first big winner in her 13 years of ownership.

“It’s very exciting,” she said. “And of course, we’re glad it was someone local who won.”

The winning numbers were drawn on Friday, May 11. The numbers were: 14 - 38 - 40 - 53 – 70, Mega Ball number 22 and the Megaplier number was 3.

Clancey’s ticket matched five numbers.

It was the first $3 million Mega Millions prize in CT Lottery history.

Unlike some big lottery winners, Clancey declined to be interviewed or photographed holding a check.

She did, however, claim her ticket using her name, not through an LLC.

The lottery likes to publicize that “real people really win is important in maintaining the public’s trust in our games.”

The Lottery routinely issues winner stories and posts them on its website.

Meanwhile, time is running out for the holder of a $1 million Powerball ticket from the Jan. 6 drawing.

That winning ticket was sold at the Stop & Shop in Kensington, a section of Berlin.

The ticket expires on July 5. After that, the state gets the $1 million.

All lottery tickets expire after 180 days.

That leaves the holder of a $1 million Powerball ticket, sold at Georgetown Shell on Danbury Road in Wilton, plenty of time to claim it.

The winning numbers from the May 2 drawing were: 5 – 14 – 31 – 40 – 50. The Powerball number was 6, and the Power Play multiplier number was 2.

In all, there were 11,107 winning Powerball tickets in Connecticut from that drawing; the Wilton ticket was the highest prize.

The holder of that Wilton ticket has until Monday, Oct. 29 to claim it.

After that, the state gets another million for its General Fund.
