BOARDWALK BASH: Friends of American Legion and Peoples State Forests invite residents to attend a Boardwalk Bash Sunday, July 1 at 1:30 p.m. to celebrate the opening of the Beaver Brook Marsh boardwalk which was built to allow access to a 55-acre marsh area in Peoples State Forest. FALPS will hold a vine cutting ceremony at the boardwalk, and then host a picnic following the ceremony at Squires Tavern at 100 East River Road. Meet at Squires Tavern at 1 p.m., where all will then carpool to the trailhead that connects to the boardwalk. All are welcome.

AUDUBON MEETING: The Litchfield Hills Audubon Society will meet Monday, July 2 at the Litchfield Community Center, at 7 p.m. The program is “Butterflie­s and Moths: The Jewels in Your Backyard” presented by naturalist John Himmelman, with photos of these insects from around the country. Himmelman, an author, illustrato­r and lecturer, is a cofounder of the Connecticu­t Butterfly Associatio­n and past president of the New Haven Bird Club. The public is welcome.

LET FREEDOM RING CELEBRATIO­N: Let Freedom Ring Independen­ce Day Celebratio­n will be held July 4, 1:45 p.m. on the Litchfield Green. Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) Color Guard members will carry and present the flag of each of the original 13 states. At 2 p.m., the church bells will be rung 13 times.

JULY 4 EVENTS AT MUSEUM:

The Eric Sloane Museum, 31 Kent-Cornwall Road/Route 7, Kent, will be open on July 4, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. To learn how to split shingles and hew logs, come to the museum between 11 a.m.-3 p.m. when the Friends of the Eric Sloane Museum will provide instructio­n and historical background and safety equipment. LITCHFIELD PET PARADE:

Litchfield Historical Society’s annual July 4th Pet Parade and Turn-of-the-Century Fest will be held July 4. Registrati­on begins at 2:15 p.m. and the parade steps off at 2:30 p.m. All community members and their pets are invited to take part in the Pet Parade around the Town Green. Prizes awarded to all pets. After the parade, enjoy old-fashioned games, including sack races, tug-of-war contests, seed spitting, and an ice cream social. LITCHFIELD CONCERT: Litchfield will celebrate July 4 with a free concert on the Green with the local band “Stache” 7-9 p.m. Donations for the town’s food pantry welcome. Only service dogs allowed, no alcohol, no open flames and no ball playing during the concert.

NO TRASH PICKUP: In observance of Independen­ce Day, there will be no curbside collection of garbage and recyclable­s on July 4 in Torrington, with a one-day delay for pickup of all municipal solid waste and recyclable­s collection for the remainder of the week following July 4. Friday’s regular collection will be on Saturday. The regular schedule will resume the following week.
