Veterans award local students with scholarships
TORRINGTON — AMVETS EAD Post 24 of Northwest Connecticut held its annual scholastic awards night on Thursday, June 24 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Torrington.
AMVETS has increased its annual scholarships from three to five. Presenting the awards were Post Commander Dan Thurston, Scholarship Chairperson Roger Geiger and Post 24 members John Lilley and Dr. Walter Davison. Students who received scholarships this year were Kristina M. Dileo of Torrington, Jenna L. Martorelli of Middlebury, Benjamin T. Frisbie of Warren, Jada A. Wilson of Lakeville and Brandon A. Herman of Torrington.
AMVETS, which is also known as American Veterans, is the most inclusive Congressionally-chartered veterans service organization open to representing the interests of 20 million veterans and their families. We are veterans serving veterans since 1944.
Founded in 1944 and chartered by an act of Congress, the AMVETS organization has more than 250,000 members nationwide. AMVETS exists to enhance the quality of life for all veterans, their families and survivors. Membership in AMVETS is open to anyone who honorably served or is currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, including the National Guard and Reserves.
AMVETS has made a longterm economic impact by providing assistance, jobs, and services to veterans and their communities for more than 70 years.
AMVETS Post 24 of Northwest Connecticut meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Knights of Columbus Hall, 152, Litchfield Street, Torrington. Members welcome all veterans to join. For more information, contact Commander Thurston at vetstalk@snet.net
