Keystone senior housing opens
TORRINGTON — The population of older citizens in Litchfield County is predicted to grow by 62 percent in about two decades.
According to a report by the Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation, “an explosion in the number of seniors... may result in serious challenges,” for the region.
One such challenge is expanding the inventory of housing in Torrington that provide services for older adults. A new entry in the city, Keystone Place at Newbury Brook, at 1058 Litchfield St., reflects the growing interest in the market segment.
“There is a demand for senior housing,” said Erin Wilson, the city’s director of economic development.
”There had been skepticism about the need,” she added. However, the Keystone property “is a successful project.”
The multistory building offers about 100 units, Wilson said. It provides a service that is unique in the state: three types of housing in one complex, she noted. It contains 40 independent living apartments, 40 assisted living units and 20 apartments for memory care services.
“In Connecticut, we don’t have that (kind of set-up),” Wilson said
Just a few years ago, plans were abandoned for the construction of a 62unit senior housing complex at 380 Torringford West St. The developers, the nonprofit Preservation of Affordable Housing, of Massachusetts, said in 2014 that it was “impossible to secure funding for senioronly housing.”
The nonprofit group previously built the Torringford West Apartments senior living complex at 356 Torringford West St.
The new Keystone property is owned by Keystone Senior LLC, based in Indianapolis. According to Bloomberg, the company owns other properties in the West and Midwest and two in Massachusetts. The local representative, Alan Miloff, could not be reached for comment.
A grand opening of the new senior housing center is expected to be held in August, Wilson said.
