- Staff reports

Caroline Garcia, the sixth-ranked player in the world, has committed the Connecticut Open.

The tournament, which runs Aug. 17-25 at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale, unveiled its entry list Tuesday.

Garcia heads the field, along with three-time winner Petra Kvitova, Wimbledon semifinalist Julia Goerges, defending champion Daria Gavrilova and 2016 winner Agnieszka Radwanska.

The list of 20 confirmed players also includes Mihaela Buzarnescu, Johanna Konta, Ashleigh Barty and Wimbledon quarterfinalist Daria Kasatkina. Garcia was a quarterfinalist in 2015 and will be making her fifth appearance in New Haven.

“New Haven is such a fantastic place to prepare for the US Open,” Garcia said in a statement. “I have played there many times in the past and always enjoy the tournament atmosphere, the support of the fans and the great competition that the strong draw provides. I have played well there in the past so I hope to be able to build on that this year.”

Goerges, who will face Serena Williams in the Wimbledon semifinals Thursday, is ranked 13th in the world. In February, she broke into the top 10 for the first time in her career.

The field also includes American Danielle Collins, a two-time NCAA champion at Virginia who beat Venus Williams at the Miami Open.

Magdalena Rybarikova, a 2014 finalist, will be making her seventh appearance in New Haven, as will 2016 quarterfinalist Ekaterina Makarova.

Barbora Strycova and Carla Suarez Navarro will each be returning for the fifth time.
