A perfect vacation knitting project

- By Ginger Balch

I love my shop, and everything about it, including spending lots of hours there.

I’m really good at finding something to do, minutes before leaving for the day.

A naked loom may need to be warped, or I may be taken by an impulse to straighten up a yarn bin or two.

I can always find lots of things that need my attention.

Lately, however, I find myself watching the clock like never before that last hour of the day.

My day off is now something to be cherished.

I’m beginning to understand the need to take time off, and thank goodness, a now-annual trip to Georgia is coming up.

It was just what I needed last year, even though I didn’t know it at the time. This mini-vacation has been on the calendar for the past two months and I have been anticipating it more than I realized.

Last year, I was quite concerned with having enough of the right knitting projects with me.

I went away with all my projects carefully prepared. I had everything I needed, I forgot nothing.

The only thing that I wasn’t prepared for were the five jam-packed days and evenings.

We were so busy seeing the sights, spending time in the pool, and eating out, that by the end of the day, I couldn’t even think about knitting.

This year my daughter, who is by nature a planner, warned me to watch for the itinerary that she would be emailing me.

As long as she schedules pool time and a girls night out, I will be happy.

Last year, I fussed so much over wearing a bathing suit that I forgot how great being in the pool was. I got over myself and actually spent all the time I could in the pool, and came home with the sunburn to prove it.

This year, I still gave my knitting careful consideration.

I also like to learn from previous experience.

That being said, I will bring one project — a scarf that is already in the works, and needs to be finished.

I will be sure to change over to a circular needle, so I don’t have to worry about loosing or dropping a second needle.

My pattern is so easy it is committed to memory. It is light weight, and enjoyable to knit.

I’m bringing it with me, but have every expectation that I may not get to it.

I may not knit even one stitch, and I’m good with that.
