Monday, Aug. 6

AUDUBON PICNIC: The Litchfield Hills Audubon Society will hold its annual picnic on Monday, Aug. 6, 6 p.m. at Boyd Woods Sanctuary, Route 254, Litchfield. Bring your own chair or blanket, food and beverages plus insect repellent. The guest is Jay Fields, an education specialist from Livingston Ripley Waterfowl Sanctuary, who will show some of the birds they care for. The presentation follows the picnic and a brief business meeting. The public is welcome.

CANDLELIGHT PEACE VIGIL: Winsted Area Peace Action will conduct a candlelight vigil on Monday, August 6, 7:30-9 p.m. in East End Park, Main Street, Winsted, to commemorate the 73rd anniversary of the atomic bombings of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, andto speak out against all violence, including gun violence, and in favor of all means of non-violent conflict resolution. At 8:30 participants will sing songs of peace joined by the young people from Camp Kinderland in Tolland, MA, a cosponsor of the vigil for years. All are welcome. THOMASTON CONCERTS: Fine Arts Connection of Thomaston will hold its summer concert on Mondays through Aug. 20, 7-8:30 p.m. at Seth Thomas Park on South Main St., Thomaston. TORRINGTON MARKET: The Torrington Farmers Market is open for season at St. Paul’s Church on Charles Street, Torrington, Tuesdays from 3-6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and will continue weekly through October. Local farmers will have fresh produce, baked goods, honey, maple syrup, soaps, crafts, and other seasonal items for sale.

RSVP COMING TO TORRINGTON: The New Opportunities Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is recruiting senior volunteers (55+) interested in volunteering for local organizations, and is visiting the Torrington Library on Tuesday, Aug. 7, 10:30 a.m. -12 p.m. RSVP is a federally funded program which is the Senior Corps of the Corporation for National and Community Service. MIKE BENT MAGIC: The Mike Bent Magic Show will be held Aug. 7, 4 p.m. at the Scoville Memorial Library, Salisbury. FIRST TUESDAY TALK: Lakeville resident Donald Mayland will be the next speaker for the Falls Village-Canaan Historical Society’s popular First Tuesday at 7 summer lecture series on Aug. 7. His topic will be “Historic Wrecks of Lake Champlain,” part two of his talks on shipwrecks. The talks take place at the South Canaan Meetinghouse, 12 Rte. 63, Falls Village, begin at 7 p.m, and last about an hour. They are open to the public and free, but donations are greatly appreciated. PURPLE HEART DAY: City of Torrington will observe National Purple Heart Day Tuesday, Aug 7 at 10 a.m. The observation begins at City Hall, 140 Main St., where the Purple Heart Flag will be raised and a designated parking space will be unveiled. Mayor Elinor Carbone and historical society executive director Mark McEachern will then lead participants to the Torrington Historical Society for a tour of the WW I exhibit. The public is welcome to attend.
