End-of-summer learning classes celebrate with parties for kids

-

TORINGTON — The Northwest Connecticut Learning Center held an end-of-summer party for a group of about 20 students and their families, celebrating the end of a successful summer session. June Zeiner, program volunteer director, hosted the party in the learning center’s second floor suite, located in the Glass Building on East Main Street.

Students enrolled in the Learning Center began their summer program on July 10 and ended Thursday in a celebration of the students’ accomplishments. Tutors presented certificates to each of their students. The Northwest Learning Center features a one-on-one learning experience for enrolled students.

“The students really look forward to coming to this inviting learning environment, and meeting their individual tutor. A bond between tutor and student develops, and it showed today on the faces of students and tutors who were all smiles and their parents sat proudly through the graduation celebration,” Zeiner said.

Zeiner and her volunteer tutors have been providing this service for many years within the school system. It has been June’s passion to bring the tutoring and mentoring one on one reading experience to an off campus, state of the art, classroom and now that she has found its home in One Torrington Office Plaza that dream is now a reality.

Zeiner and her tutors are already busy planning a fall semester opening later in the month of September. In the meantime, Zeiner’s committee is drafting fundraising strategies and grant opportunities to fund this unique, effective, and most definitely needed educational experience tailored to our most educationally challenged students.

The Northwest Connecticut Learning Center operates independently. The United Way of Northwest CT. serves as its fiscal agent as part of its Education Community Impact Initiatives.
