Volunteer group to hold fundraiser in October

- Contributed story SUSAN ARMSTRONG, QUILTS THAT CARE

WATERBURY — Quilts that Care is holding its annual fundraiser on Oct. 11, from 5to 8 p.m. at the Village at East Farms, 180 Scott Road, Waterbury.

Quilts that Care, a nonprofit organization based in Waterbury, started in April 2012 with a handful of women equipped with a few sewing machines and a passion to help others.

The hope was to make 12 quilts in the first year. The group has since blossomed into a group of more than 200 volunteers, dedicated to giving comfort and hope to individuals currently undergoing cancer treatments. We are here today because of our many volunteers who have sewn and quilted over 2,500 quilts since 2012. In 2017, we made over 700 quilts.

Members donate their finished creations to 12 facilities in Connecticut, as well as friends. The group holds sewing nights at their headquarters and other locations in and around Litchfield County.

The annual fundraiser is a fun night with quilts on display, chance drawings, music, food and cocktails.

During this event, members plan to recognize Dr. Joseph Ravalese III MD, board-certified Therapeutic Radiation Oncologist. He is affiliated with The Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center, St Mary’s Hospital, Waterbury Hospital and Bristol Hospital. Dr. Ravalese has been an ongoing, enthusiastic supporter of Quilts that Care.

Anyone who is interested in being one of the sponsors of this important work or would like to come out to meet the volunteers of this organization is asked to email QTCContact@gmail.com.

Tickets are $45 each and can be purchased at The Harold Leever Cancer Center, The Village at East Farms, at Quilts that Care Headquarters, 130 Scott Road, Waterbury, or by calling 860 782-1043. Email Deborah@quiltsthatcare.org for information.
