CFA Society raises over $15,000 for charity

HARTFORD — In between thunderstorms and rain showers, 785 runners from over 50 corporate teams raced through the city on August 2 to give back to a great local organization at the 2018 CFA Society Hartford Corporate 5K. The race got under way in scenic Bushnell Park, where race participants were guided on a course near the State Capitol.

CFA Society Hartford, the title sponsor of the race for the fourth consecutive year, raised over $15,000 for The Connection, a nonprofit that helps people build safe, healthy and caring communities. The Connection offers behavioral health, family support and community justice programs to reunite families, break the generational cycles of abuse and neglect and assist with mental illness and addiction issues.

“We set a record for donations this year! We’ve been referring to it as an “outpouring” of support from the racers who braved the weather to help members of their community,” joked Raymond Bovich, Past President and Race Committee Chair at CFA Society. “Our CFA Hartford chapter had a 15-runner team and 20 race day volunteers.”

Bovich, who is an incredibly passionate runner, worked seamlessly with race organizer JB Sports, which coordinates some of New England’s top running events, to offer a fantastic race day experience for everyone involved, in spite of the rain.

“We are grateful to the CFA Society Hartford for this generous contribution that will make a significant difference for those we serve with our unique solutions to the problems of homelessness, mental illness, substance use and community justice rehabilitation,” said Beth Connor, Chief Strategy Officer at The Connection.

Employees from some of the biggest corporations in the state teamed up to compete for awards given in four categories: Men’s Open (won by Electric Boat), Women’s Open (won by Eversource), Men’s Master’s (won by United Healthcare), and Women’s Masters (won by Farmington Savings Bank). The overall winners of the race were Farmington’s Jon Krell (15:55) and Windsor’s Melissa Stellato (18:27).

Following the race, runners enjoyed beverages, a cookout, live music, and a place to dry off and warm up.
