Torrington joins ‘Clean Up the World’
TORRINGTON — The City of Torrington is holding its first CleanUp the World Day. The cleanup will be held today from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Staging will be at Coe Memorial Park, 101 Litchfield Street, Torrington. “Clean up the world” is a worldwide environmental campaign. The campaign’s flagship event is Clean Up the World Weekend, held the third weekend in September every year since 1993. Each year an estimated 35 million people in over 130 countries participate in community-based activities that address local environmental issues. See website for further information on this campaign http://www.cleanuptheworld.org/en/ .
Volunteers are needed to help clean up the along roadways and in parks throughout Torrington. During the annual Earth Day Clean in April volunteers filled a 30 yard dumpster with tires, bicycles, furniture, building debris, shopping carts and litter. Due to overwhelming support from volunteers who are looking to take part in community and environmentally based events, we are planning this second clean-up, before the winter to help keep our City clean throughout the year.
To participate, dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes to walk distances in. If you have an orange vest or neon colored shirt, please wear it so we can outfit as many people as possible with bright safe colors. Latex gloves and trash bags will be provided; however we encourage individuals to bring their own tools, work gloves, and water. Lunch at Coe Memorial Park follows the cleanup for all volunteers. The cleanup will be held rain or shine.
