Union support for Dems questioned

-

I was not surprised to see the video of some union members shoving two women outside of the recent governor’s debate in New London. I experienced a very similar incident while attending the first Malloy/Foley debate at the very same venue. Having met with many other Foley supporters across the street, including some people with children, we went en masse to the theater as union supporters yelled at us and got into our faces. It was obvious they were trying to initiate a fight, but no one from our group broke ranks and I just smiled at them.

So why is union support for the Democrats almost a religion? Municipal unions know that their sweet deal with Connecticut is contingent on the Democrat party remaining in power. If the power structure changes, all bets are off when it comes to the “bargained” perks and benefits, such as overtime being calculated into pensions, annual longevity pay, raises and bonuses, paid time off to do union business, and a variety of other special deals.

These deals were not much of a problem back when we had money. But as the Democrats had to raise taxes to accommodate higher and higher spending due to the costs of these benefits, Connecticut became less and less competitive with other states. Between businesses leaving or downsizing operations in Connecticut and citizens leaving for cheaper pastures, we now have fewer people having to pay more money for reduced services.
