Senior art show winners announced

SOUTHBURY — Pomperaug Woods senior living community announces the recipients of the 11th annual Connecticu­t Senior Juried Art Show awards. First, second, third and honorable mention awards are presented in four categories: Painting, Drawing, Sculpture and Photograph­y.

Additional­ly, a “Best in Show” award is given to the artist who best demonstrat­es “the feeling of beauty and life in his/her artwork.”

Ralph R. Schwartz, of Monroe, is this year’s winner of the Tommie Davis Award, or “Best in Show,” for “Red’s Eats.”

Kevin Moshier, executive director at Pomperaug Woods, said the community is proud of the art show’s continued growth. He said that they received 243 entries from 133 seniors from 51 Connecticu­t towns this year.

The art show, where the winning pieces will be on display, will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday at Pomperaug Woods, located at 80 Heritage Road in Southbury. The event is free and open to the public.

The 2018 award winners are:

⏩ Most Expressive: Thelma Appel, Waterbury — Before Time

⏩ Most Innovative: Robert T. Schweizer, Avon — Summer Dreams — Hammonasse­t Beach

⏩ Abstract: Eleanor M. Phillips, Colchester — Peace Overtakes Pain

⏩ Best Execution: Lorraine Ryan, New Milford — Heirlooms

Winners in the painting category:

⏩ First place — Lynn Norris, Southbury — The Committee

⏩ Second place — Salvatore Gulino, Southbury — Bantam Bread (After Manet)

⏩ Third place — Betsy Nickerson, Southbury — Will

Winners in the drawing category:

⏩ First place — Dolores Gall, Hamden — Botswana Trees

⏩ Second place — Mary Noble Brand, Southbury — Best Friends

⏩ Third place — Jillian Kauff, Washington — David

Winners in the sculpture category:

⏩ First place — Burt Carpentier, Waterbury — Mother and Child

⏩ Second place — Sharon Curran, Bethlehem — Mustang Stallion

⏩ Third place — Bob Murray, Watertown — Celtic Staff

Winners in the photograph­y category:
