It’s ‘Almost, Maine’
Play, a sort of ‘Midwinter Night’s Dream,’ opens Saturday in Goshen
GOSHEN — Goshen Players Inc will present “Almost, Maine,” a play by John Cariani, opening Saturday at 8 p.m. at the old Goshen Town Hall.
Presented in nine related but independent scenes, “Almost, Maine” explores the magical effect love has in every life. New love in a most unexpected place, old love showing its worn patches, real love fixed like new, broken love repaired, forbidden love given its name, true love shown the light.
A place that’s so far north, it’s almost not in the United States. It’s almost in Canada.
And it’s not quite a town, because its residents never got around to getting organized. So it almost doesn’t exist.
One cold, clear, winter night, as the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, the residents of Almost, Maine, find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal, and the hearts mend — almost — in this delightful piece.
Described by the author, John Cariani, as “a Midwinter Night’s Dream,” the play is a series of nine amiably absurdist vignettes about love, with a touch of good-natured magic realism thrown in to each.
Performances continue Sunday, Oct. 27, Nov. 2-3 and 9-10 at 8 p.m., and Oct. 28 and Nov. 4 at 3 p.m. The show will be performed at the home of the Goshen Players, Old Goshen Town Hall, 2 North Street, at the Rotary Junction of Route 4 and 63.
