- STAFF REPORTS

TORRINGTON — Torrington Mayor Elinor Carbone and Director of Elderly Services, Joel Sekorski were recently presented with the 2018 Municipal Excellence Award for Creative Use of Resources, Partnerships and Collaborations. The award was given by the the 2018 Annual Convention of the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities. The award was given to Torrington in recognition of the development of a team of volunteers, donors, contractors and health advocates that came together to create the Bowman Senior Garden and Park.

“As residents and citizens of the City of Torrington, we have come to rely on and value the incredible work that our volunteers do every day,” Carbone said in a written statement. “It is that ‘can do’ attitude that makes Torrington special.

“To have an organization like CCM, Halloran & Sage, LLP and their panel of judges recognize the excellence that only comes from the partnerships and collaboration of caring members of our community is extraordinary,” Carbone said.

“All of our partners continue to help us realize our dreams. Kids feel connected to seniors and the businesses and voluntee rs that show up time after time can see the benefits their donations create,” Sekorski said in a written statement. “This project truly shows what can be accomplished when people of all ages are included in sharing their expertise, working toward a common goal that will continue to benefit the community for many years to come. The $1,000 award prize will allow us to progress on the grand idea for the Senior Park, which will encompass bee hives, a greenhouse, permanent compostable bathrooms and passive walking trails.”
