Sophomore Lexi Gordon transferring from UConn

Lexi Gordon’s time at UConn is over.

UConn coach Geno Auriemma announced Thursday that Gordon, a sophomore combo guard, intends to transfer.

Rated by ESPN as the No. 29 player in the Class of 2017, Gordon, a native of Fort Worth, Tx., seldom played during her time at UConn. Gordon (6-foot) averaged the fewest minutes on the team last year (3.7), while scoring just 11 points across 26 games.

And this season, she’s played in only four of the Huskies’ first eight games while dealing with a leg strain.

“Lexi has been a great teammate in her time at UConn, but we understand that she wants to go somewhere where she will have more opportunities to play,” Auriemma said in a statement. “We wish Lex and her

family the best as she continues her college career elsewhere.”

Said Gordon: “I would like to thank the coaching and support staffs, the fans and, most importantly, my teammates at UConn. I am

grateful for my time at Connecticut. I’ve learned what it takes to be part of a championship program and I look forward to taking this experience to the next stop in my basketball and academic career.”

Gordon becomes the second player from 2017 to leave the program, joining Andra Espinoza-Hunter,

who played only seven games (averaging 4.0 points) as a freshman. Espinoza-Hunter, a 5-11 guard from Ossining, N.Y., transferred to Mississippi State and was granted a waiver to play this season. She’s averaging 9.6 points in 18.2 minutes per game for the Bulldogs.

With Gordon leaving,

UConn is left with only nine scholarship players for 2019-20. The only recruit the Huskies have signed for next year’s class is Ossining High guard Aubrey Griffin, who is ranked by ESPN as the No. 33 player in the country.
