SHORT SHIFTS

- By Michael Fornabaio

A look at Wednesday’s hockey schedule brings only one question to mind: What’s with Notre Dame-West Haven and Northwest Catholic, waiting three and a half weeks to meet?

The other eight teams in the preseason GameTimeCT poll have head-to-head meetings on an early Super Wednesday.

It hasn’t been a bad start to the season, really: There have been six all-top-10 meetings already in the first week and a half of the season. But four in a day should be fun.

There’s No. 4 Hamden visiting co-No. 5 Xavier at Wesleyan. No. 1 Fairfield Prep head down to the other coNo. 5, Darien. No. 2 Ridgefield, which beat the No. 1 Jesuits to open the year, have No. 10 Notre Dame-Fairfield. No. 9 New Canaan visits No. 3 Greenwich. They’ll jockey for position before the poll returns at New Year’s.

And the other two don’t have slouches, either: preseason No. 8 Northwest Catholic hosts an always-game South Windsor program, while No. 7 Notre Dame-West Haven faces Simsbury, which is coming off a win over New Canaan, which beat the Green Knights.

A look at the week to come (clipped, because the CIAC schedule goes dark for three days, Sunday through Christmas) and back at some of the top performances of the first week (extended, since the openers came on a Monday):
