NWS Snowfall predictions decrease for Connecticut
After several days of anticipation, the day of the snowstorm finally came.
But for some parts of the state, forecasts Saturday looked far different from forecasts earlier in the week. The length of the storm is expected to be shorter than initially anticipated and the total snowfall is expected to fall below what meteorologists were predicting a few days ago.
A winter weather ad visory is in effect for most of the state from 4 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. Initially, the state was under a winter storm watch. Towns and cities on the westernmost part of the state remain under a winter storm watch.
The new estimated total amount of snow for the Torrington area is between 3 to 7 inches. Additional snow accumulation on Sunday is expected to be 1 to 2 inches for Torrington.
Across much of southern Connecticut, forecasts are calling for 1 to 4 inches of snow and sleet. Northern Fairfield County is expected to see anywhere from 4 to 8 inches of snow.
Despite the storm being downgraded, there is still danger and risk that comes with it. Travel will be difficult, and in some places dangerous, on slippery, snow-covered roads. Officials are asking residents to stay off the roads during the storm if possible.
With the storm on the horizon, Gov. Ned Lamont announced he would hold a winter storm news briefing from the state Emergency Operations Center in Hartford at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
