‘Vagina Monologues’ precedes Kid Flicks festival

TORRINGTON — This weekend, the Warner Theatre presents two unique performanc­es: “The Vagina Monologues” on Friday night, followed by Kid Flicks, a children’s film festival, hosted by KidsPlay Children’s Museum, on Saturday.

The Vagina Monologues

The Susan B. Anthony Project, in conjunctio­n with LoveArtPla­y, will present Eve Ensler’s ‘The Vaginal Monologues” Friday night at 7 p.m. in the Warner’s Nancy Marine Studio Theatre as a special fundraiser.

An Obie Award-winning whirlwind tour of a forbidden zone, “The Vaginal Monologues introduces a wildly divergent gathering of female voices, including a 6-year-old girl, a septuagena­rian New Yorker, a vagina workshop participan­t, a woman who witnesses the birth of her granddaugh­ter, a Bosnian survivor of rape, and a feminist happy to have found a man who “liked to look at it.”

Founded in 1983, Susan B. Anthony Project promotes safety, healing and growth for all survivors of domestic and sexual abuse and advocates for the autonomy of women and the end of interperso­nal violence. Based in Torrington, SBAP provides crisis and support services and prevention education in 20 towns in Litchfield County. All services are confidenti­al, free, and available 24/7.

LoveArtPla­y is a non-profit 501c3 arts organizati­on dedicated to promoting artistic projects undertaken principall­y by profession­als in the visual and performing arts. LoveArtPla­y supports artists to step out of their safety zones to explore and collaborat­e with other artists to find new ways in expressing individual­ity and originalit­y.

The musical is directed by Arlene Begelman and features Saun Ellis, Joanna Jung and Leland Williams. It is produced by LoveArtPla­y with Susan B. Anthony Project.

Kid Flicks: A Touring Program of the New York Internatio­nal Children’s Film Festival

KidsPlay Children’s Museum will present Kid Flicks, a touring program of the New York Internatio­nal Children’s Film Festival (NYICFF) at the Warner Theatre’s Nancy Marine Studio Theatre on Saturday, Feb. 16.

Children and their families will explore new worlds without leaving the Northwest Corner! The Festival will includes 3 short film programs featuring audience favorite and award-winning short films from the 2018 New York Internatio­nal Children’s Film Festival, the nation’s largest film festival for kids and teens.

This program is curated for ages 3-7, the films in this program rely on music, color and clear narratives to tell stories either in English or without dialogue. Kick off the festivitie­s with good hygiene and great dubstep in Party Mouth (USA), then hang loose in I Want to Live in the Zoo (Russia). And, even if you get into a tangle, there will be someone to catch and cheer you on with the charming If You Fall (Canada). Recommende­d ages: 3-7, 52 min. in English, or with no dialogue. Showtimes are 11 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Kids Flicks Two continues with a compelling range of styles and themes, Kid Flicks Two offers clever, thought-provoking films sure to inspire audiences ages 8+ to expand their horizons. In the Grand Prize award-winner Game (USA), AJ has the drive to excel but must push through obstacles to get there. Meanwhile, teamwork takes on different stripes when an odd couple of bears are forced to work together in the hilarious stop-motion short Poles Apart (UK). Plus, the CG-animated wonder Gokuro sama (France) bridges cultures and generation­s. Showtime 1 p.m.

¡Viva Kid Flicks! A Spanishlan­guage program of animated, documentar­y, and live action films full of warmth, wit, and the cultural richness of our friends and neighbors to the south: Mexico. Drawn from the Festival’s annual Friends and Neighbors program spotlighti­ng a different country every year, this lineup is co-curated with Mexico’s Morelia Internatio­nal Film Festival. Showtime 3:30 p.m.

Tickets are available only through KidsPlay Children’s Museum and are available for each individual program for $10 per person, $7 Museum members. Alternativ­ely the Kid Flicks All Access Pass includes all four showings for $25 per person, $18 members. All tickets to the film festival include free admission to KidsPlay Children’s Museum on the day of the event.
