‘Spreading love’

Messages spray-painted along Platt Hill Road bring smiles

WINSTED — In the midst of a typical busy morning, Krystal Ensminger stepped out of her Platt Hill Road home Thursday to bring her daughter, Makayla, to school.

But on this Valentine’s Day, she was greeted with an unexpected sight — a red spray-painted heart, standing out against the snow. A series of hearts were painted in the snow along the street, Ensminger said.

“It just made my morning,” Ensminger said.

Ensminger said the person who painted the hearts has not stepped forward, although word of the deed has spread through a post she made on a community Facebook page.

Ensminger would like to share her gratitude.

She said she and her neighbors were pleased to see the hearts — it’s the first time something like this has happened in the nearly three years she’s lived in the area.

The hearts were a breath of fresh air, she said — a reminder that Valentine’s Day is fundamentally about spreading love, not just with a significant other, but with your friends and acquaintances as well, and a welcome alternative to graffiti or trash.

As a commenter on her post noted, Ensminger said simple things like this can have a positive impact on people’s lives.

“Thank you for spreading love and spreading smiles,” Ensminger said. “It really made my day.”
