Sunday’s class: The glamorous Lola Cowl

- By Ginger Balch

When I saw the Lola Cowl, designed by Alexandra Davidoff, it was love at first sight. It’s one of those designs that is so perfect that I wouldn’t dream of changing a stitch. The cowl is edged with two rounds of unusual bobbles.

Although not difficult, they are more intricate than standard bobbles. After working the first round, I was totally hooked, and spoiled for ordinary bobbles ever again.

The cabled center section, which looks complex, once broken down round by round, is easily conquered. Any knitter with only the most basic of cable experience will be able to master this pattern.

The yarn that is used is a silk, alpaca and wool blend, and readily lends itself to the woolen relief created. It is also silky soft to wear.

The cable melds into a two by two ribbing, which offers itself as both a lining and foundation for the cowl. This is a cowl that is not meant to hang limply, but to have the body to gracefully embrace the wearer’s neck.

This piece is truly a piece of knitted artwork.

In Sheep’s Clothing is offering a class for the Lola Cowl. Students will learn how to knit the bobbles, to begin their project. The class runs Sunday, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Participants may call for more information and to register. Kits are available for purchase in the shop prior to class. Please call 860482-3979.
