Friendly Hands food bank seeks donations

TORRINGTON — Friendly Hands Food Bank is in need of food donations to serve people in need on a daily basis including soups, grape jelly, peanut butter, canned fruits, canned carrots, canned ravioli and Spaghetti O’s, and canned tuna, juice boxes, baked beans, pasta, jar tomato sauce, stews and chili, canned meats, instant potatoes and rice dishes.

Donations are accepted at Friendly Hands Food Bank, 50 King St., Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For informatio­n, call 8604823338.

Car donations wanted

HARTFORD — Residents are invited to donate a car, truck or van to help raise funds for a local private school. Towing provided; vehicles can be running or not running.

Grief support group offered in Salisbury

SALISBURY — SVNA is hosting a Grief Support Group to help the bereaved cope with sadness and loss in a safe space. The group is facilitate­d by SVNA’s Medical Social Worker, Liz TannerHorn and Sharon Health Care’s Social Worker, Cindy Meritt.

The group is open to all community members, and it is not necessary to attend every session. Meetings are held every Wednesday, 12 p.m. at St. John’s Church, 12 Main Street, 2nd floor, Salisbury. The group is free.

Poetry, music nights scheduled at library

KENT — The Kent Memorial Library is hosting five “Evenings of Poetry and Music” from 79 p.m. on Saturdays Sept. 14 and Dec. 7 in the Library’s Reading Room. Poet and photograph­er Karen Chase will again act as hostess for the evenings. Everyone is invited and all poets are welcome to participat­e. If you are not a poet but have a favorite poem written by someone else, you are welcome to read and if you like poetry but don’t write your own, please come to listen. Musicians and singers are also welcome to join in.

Depending on the number of readers, participan­ts may be able to read from one to five or more poems. All will be given an opportunit­y to read. A musical interlude and refreshmen­ts will follow along with a second round of poetry and music if time allows.

Homeowners tax credit applicatio­ns available

NORTH CANAAN — The Town of North Canaan Assessor’s Office will accept Elderly Homeowner Tax Credit applicatio­ns from Feb. 1May 15, and is also accepting applicatio­ns for the State Additional Veterans Exemption and Local Option Veterans Exemptions, Feb. 1Oct. 1.

If you are on any of the programs already, applicatio­ns will be mailed. If you are a first time filer, applicatio­ns are available in the Assessor’s Office.

Church offers rooms to outside groups

LITCHFIELD —The First Congregati­onal Church of Litchfield is offering the use of most of its rooms for use by outside groups.

This would include not only meeting rooms, but the Fellowship Hall with a complete kitchen. Rooms vary in size that would be appropriat­e for smaller, more intimate meetings or counseling, to rooms that would hold up to 50 people. The buildings are ADA accessible. Ample parking is available.

The church, which will celebrate its 300th anniversar­y in two years, is responding to the many requests that have been made in the past due to the lack of such facilities in Litchfield.
