Witkos, Carbone tour city’s Opportunity Zone
TORRINGTON — State Sen. Kevin Witkos, RCanton, recently met with Torrington Mayor Elinor Carbone and Economic Development Director Rista Malanca to tour the Opportunity Zone in Torrington and discuss the potential for redevelopment in that area. Accoding to the CT Department of Economic & Community Development, “Opportunity Zones in Connecticut are created to attract private investment to improve economic growth, community wealth, business development, housing opportunities and infrastructure while creating significant jobs in the most challenged but promising areas of Connecticut. Connecticut’s Opportunity Zones typically present vibrant downtowns, robust transit options, robust housing demand, and a growing and diverse private sector of entrepreneurs and innovative companies.”
“I am very excited for the potential for growth and economic development as a result of the Opportunity Zone in Torrington. This presents a great opportunity for new investment for our local and state economy. I look forward to continuing to work with Mayor Carbone and her team in Torrington and with our partners in the Department of Economic & Community Development to continue to support these efforts,” Witkos said in a statement.
“Given the magnitude of the brownfield grants, opportunity zone designation and technical assistance the State of Connecticut has given to Torrington over the past several years, I am pleased to show off the progress we are making and to demonstrate the anticipated returns on the state’s investment. We truly appreciate Senator Witkos’ visit and his interest in supporting our development efforts. While these incentives and assistance have served as a catalyst to this development potential, we greatly appreciate the continued attention and advice on ways to capitalize and influence increasing incentives that can make our projects happen” Carbone said.
