Old Home Day set for Sunday in Barkhamsted

BARKHAMSTED — Members of the First Congregational Church of Barkhamsted are hosting the traditional Old Home Day Sept. 8.

The programs begin at 10 a.m. with a congregational worship service, followed by a potluck lunch served outside the church on the portico, weather permitting, or inside Fellowship Hall. Everyone is welcome to bring a special beverage.

The church is located at 6 Old Town Hall Road in Barkhamsted. For directions or information visit www.barkhamstedfirstchurch.org.

Old Home Day originated from the 1979 celebration of Barkhamsted’s 100th anniversary of becoming an incorporated town in 1879. One of the traditions is to take a group photograph on the portico immediately following the service.

All are welcome and all services are free. For more information call the Rev. Susan Wyman at 8603797300, or on the day of the event call the church at 8603795864.

Living History Day begins at 10 a.m.

LITCHFIELD — The Litchfield Green will be the site of a day honoring Litchfield’s Revolutionary War Patriots and their contribution to the 18th Century burgeoning new nation. All will be part of the townwide celebration of Litchfield’s 300th Anniversary, Saturday from 10 a.m.5 p.m.

Litchfield was incorporated on May 19, 1719. This daylong event is free and open to the public. It is organized by the Litchfield Patriots, a volunteer group of citizens, eager to share the rich history of this Revolutionary town.

On the Center Green, Litchfield’s two American Legion Posts will open the day with a ceremony honoring the Revolutionary War Veterans by raising a 13star flag accompanied by music of the period and Revolutionary reenactors. The West Green will be turned into a typical 18th century village. Visitors will be able to be engaged with various aspects of village life and meet towns folk of the era.

On the East Green, Children of the American Revolution will display children’s items from daily life. The Daughters of the American Revolution will have genealogists available who will share information about how to find out about one’s ancestors.

The Sons of the American Revolution will set up a military encampment typical to that period in history.

Since St. Paul’s Masonic Lodge was established during the Revolutionary War, the lodge will host an open house to share their history.
