Hurley undergoes surgery
Dan Hurley underwent successful surgery on Friday to relieve persistent neck and upper back discomfort, according to a release sent out by UConn.
Hurley, the Huskies’ secondyear head coach, is resting comfortably and is expected to be released from the hospital within the next day or two. He will continue his recuperation at home, and is not expected to miss the start of UConn’s official practices, which begin on Sept. 28.
Hurley did not miss any of UConn’s preseason workouts, which began last week after students returned to campus. UConn can officially get back out to see potential recruits for 2020, 2021 and beyond on Monday, but Hurley won’t be able to get out on the road for at least a few weeks.
The Huskies’ season begins on Nov. 8 against Sacred Heart. UConn’s full 201920 schedule should be released around the middle of next week, once the American Athletic Conference releases its league slate.
According to UConn’s release, sent out in an email, “Surgery was deemed to be the best course of treatment for Coach Hurley to alleviate symptoms of degenerative changes in the cervical spine.”
The surgery was performed by Dr. Roger Hartl and his team at the Center for Comprehensive Spine Care in New York City.
Hurley’s recuperation will be monitored by his personal physicians and the UConn medical staff and he will resume all normal basketball coaching and recruiting activities as soon as he has sufficiently recovered. In his absence, team activities will continue under his coaching staff — Tom Moore, Kenya Hunter and Kimani Young.
