Institute announces appointmen­t, new hire

HARTFORD –The Hartford HealthCare Ayer Neuroscien­ce Institute recently named Amy Sanders, MD, MS, FAAN, as Director of its Memory Care Center.

The institute also announced the appointmen­t of Dr. Elena Bortan, a movement disorders specialist, to its team.

Clinically, Dr. Sanders’ areas of interest include memory and cognition, normal cognitive aging, and quality measure developmen­t and implementa­tion.

Dr. Sanders completed her medical degree at the State University of New York Downstate College of Medicine in Brooklyn, NY. She completed a medical internship at St. Luke’sRoosevelt Hospital and her residency in adult neurology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, NY. Postreside­ncy, Dr. Sanders completed a fellowship in Cognitive and Memory Disorders at the Einstein Aging Study and earned a Master’s degree in Clinical Research Methods at Einstein. Prior to completing her medical degree, Dr. Sanders earned an undergradu­ate degree summa cum laude at Loyola University of Chicago, and a Master’s of Philosophy in European history at Columbia University.

Boardcerti­fied by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Dr. Sanders is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, and a member of the Internatio­nal Society to Advance Alzheimer Research & Treatment, the American Geriatric Society, the Society for Behavioral & Cognitive Neurology, and the American Neuropsych­iatric Associatio­n.

Dr. Bortan comes to Hartford HealthCare from Middlesex Hospital, where she has worked for almost a decade. She earned her medical degree from Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Romania. She completed a residency in neurology at TuftsNew England Medical Center and a fellowship in movement disorders at the Lahey Clinic.

Fluent in English and Romanian, Dr. Bortan’s areas of clinical interest are movement disorders including Parkinsoni­sm, essential tremor and others; botulinum toxin che-modenervat­ion for dystonia, blepharosp­asm and spasticity; deep brain stimulatio­n; and general neurology. She is boardcerti­fied in neurology and a member of the American Academy of Neurology and Movement Disorder Society.

Women & Girls Fund Supports Civics Education

TORRINGTON — The Women & Girls Fund, a fund of the Northwest Connecticu­t Community Foundation has awarded a grant of $1,245 to Northwest Connecticu­t YMCA to support citizenshi­p classes, including ESL and civics instructio­n for mothers and daughters.

“The path toward citizenshi­p is the path toward stability and security for families in Northwest Connecticu­t,” said Frances Stoffer, Vice Chair of the Women and Girls Executive Committee. “When mothers and daughters work together to achieve this goal, the path is cleared of obstacles for them. They find strength in helping each other.”

The Women & Girls Fund awards grants in support of local organizati­ons that are working to develop economic selfsuffic­iency for women by means of education, financial literacy and social services.
