KEEP AN EYE ON

It begins again: Geno Auriemma doesn’t care where the conference opener falls on the calendar. The objective is always the same.

“It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter,” the UConn coach said Friday before practice. “If you’re going to win a conference game, what difference does it make if you win it in November or December? If you’re going to lose one, what difference does it make?”

UConn and Temple had been penciled in to play in late January, but the game was moved up to accommodate the Huskies’ exhibition against the U.S. national team. After Sunday, the Huskies won’t play within the American Athletic Conference again until Jan. 2 against Wichita State.

“I have this conversation with coaches all the time, ‘Well, we’re not ready for this.’ Well, we’re not either. Both teams are in the same boat,” Auriemma said. “Just get it over with.”

UConn has won all 120 games it has played against AAC opponents since 2013-14. All but one of those games (Tulane 63-60, Feb. 18, 2017) has been decided by double digits.

Making a point: A big concern of Auriemma’s, maybe the biggest, is how the Huskies will fare this year when point guard Crystal Dangerfield isn’t on the floor. Right now, he’s not sure that anyone can step up in her place.

“I’ve got ideas, but none of them are any good,” Auriemma said. “I may have to come up with a good idea. We’re working on it little by little.”

Sophomore Christyn Williams said she’s gotten more practice at the position just in case.

“I might be a little uncomfortable at times, but I have to do what I have to do,” she said.

One-sided affair: UConn is 13-2 all-time against Temple, with both losses coming before Auriemma’s arrival. Last season, the Huskies beat Temple 88-67 in Philadelphia and 10974 in Storrs.
