Groups offer scholarship application deadlines
can now apply for a variety of scholarships offered by foundations and organizations in the northwest corner. Deadlines vary and contact information is provided for each opportunity.
Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation: Scholarship applications are now available for the more than $150,000 available to area students. Scholarship guidelines, requirements and applications are available on the Community Foundation website. Applications for the 2020-21 academic year must be submitted by April 1. The Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation serves Litchfield County with a collection of more than 30 scholarship funds from local donors. These funds provide scholarships to area students throughout the Northwest Corner. The foundation serves the towns of Barkhamsted, Bethlehem, Canaan/Falls Village, Colebrook, Cornwall, Goshen, Hartland, Harwinton, Kent, Litchfield, Morris, New Hartford, Norfolk, North Canaan, Salisbury, Sharon, Torrington, Warren, Washington and Winsted/Winchester.

Greenwoods Scholarship Foundation: Students who are residents of Barkhamsted, Colebrook, Hartland, New Hartford, Norfolk and Winchester, as well as students at Northwestern Connecticut Community College, are eligible to receive a Greenwoods Scholarship. High school graduates and those already matriculated in a college or university may apply. Application forms and instructions may be obtained online at www.gsfct.org or from The Gilbert School, Northwestern Regional #7, Explorations, Oliver Wolcott Technical School, the Hartland Town Hall, and the Financial Aid Office at NCCC.
Last year the Greenwoods Scholarship Foundation distributed scholarships valued at $129,600 to 93 recipients. In addition, the Foundation also gave a $15,000 Allied Health Grant and a $5,000 Workforce Development Grant to Northwestern Connecticut Community College. Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Auxiliary: Students can apply for one of 10 $1,000 scholarships, available to local students pursuing an education in a healthcare field. Two additional scholarships, the Doctor Alfred Fabro Award and the Doctor Joseph Curi Award will also be presented in the amount of $1,000 each. Applicants must reside in a community served by Charlotte Hungerford Hospital and must be planning to matriculate at a college or institution of higher education for a healthcare degree.
Applications and instructions for completing the application may be obtained by e-mailing chhscholarship@gmail.org. Area colleges and high schools also have applications available online through their guidance departments. All completed applications and attachments must be printed out and sent by mail, postmarked no later than March 1, to the attention of Ellen Durstin at 102 Tanglewood Rd., New Hartford, CT 06057. A letter will be sent to all applicants by the first week of May 2020 notifying them of their status. Recipients of the scholarships are expected to be present at the award ceremony scheduled for May 5.

Phipps, Schoelzel scholarships: The Harwinton Woman's Club, on behalf of the General Federation of Women's Clubs in Connecticut, is accepting applications for both the Phipps Memorial Scholarship and the Dorothy E. Schoelzel Scholarship, which are intended to help state women pursue advanced courses of study in accredited institutions of learning. Phipps Scholarship candidates must have completed two or more years of undergraduate work, matriculating for a bachelor's degree or a post-graduate degree with a 3.0 grade point average or better. Candidates for the Schoelzel Scholarship must have completed three or more years of undergraduate work in an accredited institution of higher learning with a 3.0 grade point average or better. EdAdvance scholarships: For more than 20 years, EdAdvance has awarded annual scholarships to high school seniors and GED students in our service area based on their responses to an essay. This year, respondents were asked to describe an instance when they used their time and talents to serve their own school or community as a volunteer or leader. Essays will be judged based on clarity, example of talent, motivation, future plans, grammar, and are limited to 500 words. Winning essays will make a strong connection between each student’s contribution and the positive impact his or her actions had on people or institutions in their community.
All applications are due by Wednesday, April 1. Four graduating high school seniors from within the EdAdvance service area will be awarded a $1,500 college scholarship on or around May 8.
