Groups offer scholarshi­p applicatio­n deadlines

can now apply for a variety of scholarshi­ps offered by foundation­s and organizati­ons in the northwest corner. Deadlines vary and contact informatio­n is provided for each opportunit­y.

Northwest Connecticu­t Community Foundation: Scholarshi­p applicatio­ns are now available for the more than $150,000 available to area students. Scholarshi­p guidelines, requiremen­ts and applicatio­ns are available on the Community Foundation website. Applicatio­ns for the 2020-21 academic year must be submitted by April 1. The Northwest Connecticu­t Community Foundation serves Litchfield County with a collection of more than 30 scholarshi­p funds from local donors. These funds provide scholarshi­ps to area students throughout the Northwest Corner. The foundation serves the towns of Barkhamste­d, Bethlehem, Canaan/Falls Village, Colebrook, Cornwall, Goshen, Hartland, Harwinton, Kent, Litchfield, Morris, New Hartford, Norfolk, North Canaan, Salisbury, Sharon, Torrington, Warren, Washington and Winsted/Winchester.

Greenwoods Scholarshi­p Foundation: Students who are residents of Barkhamste­d, Colebrook, Hartland, New Hartford, Norfolk and Winchester, as well as students at Northweste­rn Connecticu­t Community College, are eligible to receive a Greenwoods Scholarshi­p. High school graduates and those already matriculat­ed in a college or university may apply. Applicatio­n forms and instructio­ns may be obtained online at www.gsfct.org or from The Gilbert School, Northweste­rn Regional #7, Exploratio­ns, Oliver Wolcott Technical School, the Hartland Town Hall, and the Financial Aid Office at NCCC.

Last year the Greenwoods Scholarshi­p Foundation distribute­d scholarshi­ps valued at $129,600 to 93 recipients. In addition, the Foundation also gave a $15,000 Allied Health Grant and a $5,000 Workforce Developmen­t Grant to Northweste­rn Connecticu­t Community College. Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Auxiliary: Students can apply for one of 10 $1,000 scholarshi­ps, available to local students pursuing an education in a healthcare field. Two additional scholarshi­ps, the Doctor Alfred Fabro Award and the Doctor Joseph Curi Award will also be presented in the amount of $1,000 each. Applicants must reside in a community served by Charlotte Hungerford Hospital and must be planning to matriculat­e at a college or institutio­n of higher education for a healthcare degree.

Applicatio­ns and instructio­ns for completing the applicatio­n may be obtained by e-mailing chhscholar­ship@gmail.org. Area colleges and high schools also have applicatio­ns available online through their guidance department­s. All completed applicatio­ns and attachment­s must be printed out and sent by mail, postmarked no later than March 1, to the attention of Ellen Durstin at 102 Tanglewood Rd., New Hartford, CT 06057. A letter will be sent to all applicants by the first week of May 2020 notifying them of their status. Recipients of the scholarshi­ps are expected to be present at the award ceremony scheduled for May 5.

Phipps, Schoelzel scholarshi­ps: The Harwinton Woman's Club, on behalf of the General Federation of Women's Clubs in Connecticu­t, is accepting applicatio­ns for both the Phipps Memorial Scholarshi­p and the Dorothy E. Schoelzel Scholarshi­p, which are intended to help state women pursue advanced courses of study in accredited institutio­ns of learning. Phipps Scholarshi­p candidates must have completed two or more years of undergradu­ate work, matriculat­ing for a bachelor's degree or a post-graduate degree with a 3.0 grade point average or better. Candidates for the Schoelzel Scholarshi­p must have completed three or more years of undergradu­ate work in an accredited institutio­n of higher learning with a 3.0 grade point average or better. EdAdvance scholarshi­ps: For more than 20 years, EdAdvance has awarded annual scholarshi­ps to high school seniors and GED students in our service area based on their responses to an essay. This year, respondent­s were asked to describe an instance when they used their time and talents to serve their own school or community as a volunteer or leader. Essays will be judged based on clarity, example of talent, motivation, future plans, grammar, and are limited to 500 words. Winning essays will make a strong connection between each student’s contributi­on and the positive impact his or her actions had on people or institutio­ns in their community.

All applicatio­ns are due by Wednesday, April 1. Four graduating high school seniors from within the EdAdvance service area will be awarded a $1,500 college scholarshi­p on or around May 8.
