Towns cancel parades and celebrations

- STAFF REPORTS

Based on concerns about the coronavirus pandemic, the following towns have canceled their Memorial Day celebrations.

Harwinton’s parade, set for May 25, has been canceled. Despite that decision, the Air Force National Guard’s 103 Airlift Wing (at Bradley airport) is intending to conduct flyovers over Connecticut towns on Memorial Day. These flyovers are in conjunction with Operation American Resolve to boost morale and demonstrate the Air Force’s continued readiness during the national COVID-19 response, while saluting the American heroes at the forefront in the fight against COVID-19.

The Harwinton American Legion Post 137 has planned a short, private tribute at the veterans war memorial on the town green and is working with the 103 AW to coordinate the town’s flyover time, to be announced.

Winchester’s parade has also been canceled. “This was a difficult decision,” said organizer Neil Hunt. “Please be sure to take the time to recognize and thank a veteran as well as pause in your daily activities to remember those who gave all.”

Bantam’s American Legion Post 44 has canceled its parade, which is usually held on Sunday. In addition, Litchfield’s parade on May 25 is canceled.

“There are still ways to honor those veterans who gave their lives for our country and to care for veterans who are isolated,” members said in a statement. “Please visit veteran's graves in cemeteries, while there pick up sticks, weed around graves, check the condition of their flags and don't forget to salute them and offer your thanks. Call home-bound veterans to ask if they are in need of anything, spend a few minutes chatting and offer your concerns for their wellbeing.

First Selectwoman Denise Raap said recently that since firefighters and other groups have held town parades, there is a possibility that a parade will come to the town. Further details will be announced.

Torrington has canceled its Memorial Day parade, scheduled for May 25.

“In observance of the National Moment of Remembrance Resolution, we are asking our residents to join us in saluting the sacrifice by standing outside their homes at 3 p.m. May 25, for the tolling of an honor bell. It is our hope that every neighborhood will join in this bell-ringing observance. It doesn’t matter what kind of bell, what size bell, or if you download a bell tone, we just want to demonstrate to all of our veterans and the families and friends of those we lost in service or after service to our country, that we will never forget and we are forever grateful,” said Mayor Elinor Carbone.
