COMMUNITY CHAT: A weekly Community Chat with the Scoville Memorial Library, Mondays on Zoom. PARADE CANCELED, CEREMONY: The Harwinton Memorial Day parade and ceremony scheduled for Memorial Day has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Harwinton American Legion Post 137 is intending to do a short, private tribute at the veterans war memorial on the town green.

VIRTUAL PARADE: To protect the health of residents and visitors, Torrington’s Memorial Day parade has been canceled. Mayor Elinor Carbone and the Torrington Veterans Memorial Committee will develop a “virtual parade” slideshow, and a video veterans’ recognitio­n ceremony, to be shared at torrington­ct.org and with local media. All Torrington organizati­ons have been asked to share a photo of their group celebratin­g veterans. All the pictures will be included in a slide show at 9 a.m. May 25. HONOR BELL: In observance of the National Moment of Remembranc­e Resolution on Memorial Day, May 25, Torrington residents are invited to salute veterans by standing outside their homes at 3 p.m. for the tolling of an honor bell. It doesn’t matter what kind of a bell, what size bell, or if you download a bell tone.

NO TRASH PICKUP: There will be no curbside collection of trash and recyclable­s on Memorial Day in Torrington. There will be a one-day delay for pick up of all municipal solid waste and recyclable­s collection for the remainder of the week following Memorial Day. Friday’s regularly schedule

MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY: The Soldiers’ Monument Commission will be holding a Virtual Memorial Day Ceremony. The filmed ceremony will include an introducti­on by Mayor Candy Perez, a ceremonial flag lowering and raising, a reading of the names of the soldiers from Winsted who died in battle, the laying of ceremonial wreaths at five memorial sites throughout town, along with a poetry reading by Gail Hoxie who won this year’s Memorial Day poetry contest. The filmed ceremony will be posted on www.soldiersmo­numentwins­ted.org. VEHICLE PARADE: Vehicle Memorial Day Parade, 6 p.m. The Winsted and Winchester Center Volunteer Fire Department­s are sponsoring a vehicle Memorial Day parade to honor our veterans and healthcare workers. The parade route will begin in Winchester Center heading east South Street and end at East End Park.

BOOK DISCUSSION: Cornwall author Roxana Robinson will lead a discussion of “Madame Bovary” by Gustave Flaubert at the Cornwall Library, 5 p.m., May 27, June 3, June 10. She’ll be using the Lydia Davis translatio­n for the three-part program. Attendees are encouraged to read the book to more fully participat­e in the discussion­s. The Library has purchased a few copies for those who would like to read the recommende­d translatio­n and would appreciate a $20 donation to cover the cost of the book.
