UConn’s game with Texas pushed back
There’s no telling what COVID-19’s impact will be on UConn’s 2020-21 schedule or the women’s college basketball season as a whole.
But this we do know: Texas’ visit will wait.
UConn was scheduled to host Texas next season, but the game has been pushed back a year at the Longhorns’ request, a school spokesperson confirmed Wednesday.
The Huskies will visit Austin in 2022-23 to complete the home-and-home series.
Carl Adamec of the Manchester Journal Inquirer first reported the scheduling change.
Texas is entering its first season under Vic Schaefer, a name that should ring a bell to UConn fans. Schaefer coached at Mississippi State when the Bulldogs shocked UConn 66-64 in overtime at the 2017 Final Four in Dallas. The loss snapped the Huskies’ record 111-game winning streak and ended their run at a fifth straight national title.
The Huskies must postpone or eliminate one more non-league game to meet the NCAA’s limit of 29 for next season. At the moment, they’re scheduled to host Dayton, Little Rock, Maryland and South Carolina and visit Baylor, California, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Virginia. They’ll also play Quinnipiac and either Mississippi State or Maine in the Hall of Fame Women’s Challenge at Mohegan Sun, but those games won’t count toward the limit.
Of course, the Huskies will also play 20 league games as part of their return to the Big East.
UConn is 8-0 all-time against Texas, including a 75-71 victory on Jan. 15, 2018 in Austin in their most recent meeting.
