Winsted native takes command of Marines’ logistics operations group

- STAFF REPORTS

WINSTED — Marine Corps Col. Aaron Angell, a Winsted native, took command of the Marine Corps Logistics Operations Group in late June.

Angell is a 1993 graduate of The Gilbert School, according to his parents, Tim and Debbie Angell of Winsted. He has moved several times between the east and west coasts and has deployed overseas seven times. Angell, his wife, Megan, and their three daughters recently moved from the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany, Ga., to the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, Calif., according to his parents.

Angell describes the Marine Corps Logistics Operations Group as the “Top Gun School for Marine Corps Logistics.”

“This group focuses efforts to advance military logistics through a blend of training and education,” according to a statement. “Angell provides oversight for the training of individuals from several diverse military logistics fields, as well as Marine Corps logistics units. Through multiple courses, the Marine Corps Logistics Operations Group develops critical thinking skills for Marines to operate with flexibility and agility in complex environments overseas.”

Angell just completed 23 years of active service in the Marine Corps. He has served at Camp Lejuene in North Carolina, Camp Pendleton and Miramar Air Station in California, Marine Corps Base Quantico and the Pentagon in Virginia, and most recently at the Marine Corps Logistics Base, Albany, Georgia.

He has deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, Bahrain, Germany, and aboard ship in the Mediterranean Sea, according to the statement. As he thinks back to his childhood in Winsted, he recalls many experiences that helped to develop his dedication to service and his seeking for challenge. “He fondly recalls his experiences in Boy Scout Troop 27, as a summer camp counselor who worked at Camp Workcoeman on West Hill Pond, and working with the American Red Cross chapter in Winsted,” according to the statement.

According to his mother, Debbie Angell, “I am a very proud parent ... I recall Marine Ted Marolda, a WWII veteran, speaking to Aaron (when he was_ 4 years old. We lived across the street from the Maroldas ... Aaron would frequently cross Wetmore

Avenue to talk to Mr. Marolda and to eat Mrs. Marolda’s cookies. To this day, Ted continues to keep in touch, always looking for an update on Aaron. Several of Aaron’s teachers continue to stop by and ask as well. They were such an important part of his life.”

Angell was born in Scranton, Pa. After his family moved to Winsted, he attended the Batcheller School and went through the Winchester Public Schools. He then attended the U.S. Naval Academy, two weeks after graduation from The Gilbert School. He graduated from the academy in 1997.

“Additional education came from, of course, parenting, church leaders and youth group, Scouting, sports organizations, Elks, neighbors and friends,” Debbie Angell said. “It surely takes a village to raise a child. Tim and I consistently thank the parties involved in helping to raise our children. We continue to reside in

Winsted and we continue to help others in need, through the Elks, the ambulance and so many other great organizations.”
