Making the switch to online newspaper

-

I never thought the day would come, but I seem to have shifted to reading the newspaper online instead of on paper. It began because of minimal but lingering qualms about picking up the wrapped paper from my front drive every morning during the pandemic. But when a late delivery obliged me to check out the online access that comes with my subscription to the paper version, I discovered how extraordinarily convenient it is to use.

Propping my Android on its stand, I just tap the icon link and page 1 opens up before me in its familiar format. But now instead of having to prop up a large piece of newsprint, and having to turn to another page and then back again for each article, I just touch the headline of any article I want to read, and the whole text appears for me to scroll through. Then a simple touch gets me back to the full page facsimile or I can just forward to the next article.

Another fine feature is being able to share any article, or for that matter copy, paste, and mail the plain text of any article for my own future reference.

I still hope the good ol’ paper version will stick around, but it’s hard to deny the ecological advantage of less newsprint to have to recycle, as well.

I think the reason I have resisted for so long is that I don’t care at all for the style of strictly online news sources that don’t put any order on the articles but simply let you scroll through one after another. I appreciate the curated pages and sections of the traditional newspaper. Not even this newspaper’s own website offers the same sort of organization. Having access to an online version of the paper version gives me the best of both worlds. So thanks and keep up the good work! Joel Marks
