UConn reports 24 new cases,11 of them off campus

STORRS — The University of Connecticu­t reported two dozen new coronaviru­s infections in the previous 24 hours Tuesday.

Eleven new cases were found among students living on campus at Storrs, along with 11 new cases off campus.

“Thirteen of the 22 were identified through surveillan­ce testing; nine were already in medical quarantine,” according to Stephanie Reitz, a UConn spokeswoma­n.

The remaining two new cases were reported among employees.

As of Tuesday, the university reported 65 positive or symptomati­c cases among residentia­l students at Storrs.

The new cases brought the cumulative number off campus to 217 since mid-September, after the school completed its re-entry testing for off-campus students.

Another 20 active cases were also reported among residentia­l students at UConn’s Stamford campus.

UConn’s Stamford, Avery Point and Waterbury campuses have each reported one case among commuter students this semester, according to the school’s dashboard.

UConn’s surge of new cases in recent weeks has come as the state is looking at ways to minimize the impact of college students traveling over the Thanksgivi­ng holiday.

On Monday, Gov. Ned Lamont said he’s considerin­g a requiremen­t with other governors in the region for students to be tested for the virus before and after they return from the holiday break.

Last week, Fairfield University announced students who return home over Thanksgivi­ng break will no longer be allowed back on campus and will have to complete their semester online.

The university has raised its COVID-19 alert level to orange and cancelled most in-person activities aside from academics.

Fairfield U. officials reported six new cases as of Monday — all

among students — bringing the university’s active caseload to 111.

Quinnipiac and Sacred Heart Universiti­es have both moved their alert levels to red and moved classes to online only.

Quinnipiac, in Hamden, reported five new cases over the weekend as of Monday, with 128 new cases last week. The active caseload there fell to 268, down from 357 a few days before.

Sacred Heart, in Fairfield, reported 18 new cases as of Monday, all among students. The new infections brought the active cases at that school to 207— including seven employees.

Western Connecticu­t State

University in Danbury reported 12 new cases last week, bringing the cumulative number of cases for the semester to 41.

Southern Connecticu­t State University in New Haven reported 51 new cases last week, bringing the school’s cumulative total for the semester to 150.

The University of Bridgeport reported 28 active positive cases as of Sunday, mostly among students. The school has seen 45 cases so far this semester, according to its data.

The University of Hartford in West Hartford reported 18 new cases last week, bringing the number of active cases there to 17

as of Tuesday.

The University of Saint Joseph, also in West Hartford reported six new cases between Nov. 7 and last Friday, all among students.

The University of New Haven in West Haven reported 27 new cases in the previous seven days as of Tuesday, with an active caseload of 41— including three faculty or staff members.

Wesleyan University in Middletown reported 13 new cases last week, bringing the active caseload to 14 — the majority of them among employees.

Central Connecticu­t State University in New Britain reported six new cases as of Mon

day, bringing the cumulative number there to 136 so far this semester.

Connecticu­t College in New London reported six new cases last week, bringing the active caseload there to 12.

Eastern Connecticu­t State University in Willimanti­c reported 18 new cases last week, mostly among residentia­l students. Forty-three students there were in quarantine or isolation as of last week, according to the school’s data.

Trinity College in Hartford reported 17 new cases last week. There were 15 active cases there as of Monday.
