UConn reports 8 new COVID-19 cases

Some colleges and universiti­es around the state have also begun reporting cases of COVID-19 as students return for the spring semester, but several don’t plan to resume in-person instructio­n until February.

STORRS — The University of Connecticu­t reported eight new cases of COVID-19 Tuesday, a week after the start of the spring semester.

Three of the new cases were found among University employees and affiliates, according to UConn’s dashboard. Three were found among students living on campus at Storrs, while two others were students living off campus attending Storrs.

As of Tuesday, 35 students at the Storrs campus are in isolation after testing positive or showing symptoms. Two students have recovered so far this spring semester and left isolation.

Quinnipiac University in Hamden reported 21 positive cases out of 4,453 tests as of Monday. Sixteen of the cases were found among residentia­l students, while the remaining five were among off-campus students.

The University of Bridgeport reported 12 cases last week, mostly among commuter students with one case in the ranks of the university’s faculty and staff.

The University of New

Haven reported 26 cases within the past seven days as of Tuesday. Among students, there are 20 active cases, and 6 among staff.

Central Connecticu­t State University reported one new case among commuter students to its New Britain campus on Monday, along with two new cases among staff.

Connecticu­t College in New London reported two new cases, both among employees, last week. Those cases brought the active caseload to four, all involving college employees.

Yale University reported 29 new cases last week, 16 of them among faculty and staff.

Trinity College in Hartford reported three active cases, all among staff, as of Monday.

At Sacred Heart University

in Fairfield, students moved back in on Monday and Tuesday. In a message to students Tuesday, the university reminded them to wear a mask any time they are out of their “pod”— students’ immediate housemates.

“We know we have said this before, and we will say it again. That’s because we know it is one of the hardest things to do, and we want to emphasize this from the very beginning of the semester in advance of events like Super Bowl Sunday,” the message said.
