What’s for lunch, VP Harris? Famous New Haven pizza

- By Mark Zaretsky

NEW HAVEN — What does Vice President Kamala Harris eat for lunch when she comes to New Haven?

Sally’s Apizza — or at least that’s what she and/or her entourage ate Friday. Not Pepe’s. Not Modern Apizza. Not Zuppardi’s, Mike’s, Ernie’s, Dayton Street, Tolli’s, Roseland, Abate or BAR.

Three Harris staffers picked up the 15 large Sally’s pizzas to go at about 3:30 p.m., with General Manager Rob Nelson, Regional Manager Oly Knudsen and former Sally’s owners Rick Consiglio

and Bob Consiglio all on hand. Harris’ entourage had another, smaller order in to pick up later in the day, said Nelson.

“It’s pretty cool that they came here,” Nelson said. “It’s always exciting when somebody famous comes here.”

According to Nelson, among the pies were:

⏩ 2 cheese (or “mootz,” for the “abeets” folks).

⏩ 4 pepperoni.

⏩ 2 garden specials (fresh tomato, zucchini and onion white pies).

⏩ 1 with a bunch of random toppings.

⏩ 4 sausage, mushroom and onions.

Sally’s also gave the Harris crew:

⏩ 2 plain pies with sauce and garlic, one of which also had onions.

⏩ 2 fresh tomato white pies.

⏩ 1 plain potato, well-baked.

⏩ 2 not-on-the-menu “staff favorites”: The Ray’s Special (sausage, pepperoni, bacon and mixed hot and roasted peppers) and the Bella’s Special (white potato, extra mootz, hot peppers and bacon).

⏩ Plus, two “secret pies.”

Just what are “secret pies”? “That’s just the thing; they’re secret,” said Nelson.

The staffer who ordered the pies and was one of the three who picked them up, Dawn E., said she herself had never tried Sally’s before, but “it’s world famous,” she said.

“Enjoy it,” said Bob Consiglio, who no longer owns Sally’s but along with his brother still is an adviser to it and still stops by.

Just one warning, he said: “It’s not going to be hot.”

While the pickup was generally a secret, there were a few others on hand besides the Consiglio brothers, including Colin Caplan, co-producer of the “Pizza: A Love Story” movie and author of the “Pizza in New Haven” book, and Dean Falcone, also co-producer of the “Pizza: A Love Story” movie.

Sally’s, of course, is one of New Haven’s legendary, world-renowned apizza joints — Number 9 in The Daily Meal’s 2020 list of “The 101 Best Pizzas in America.”

Sally’s Apizza, located at 237 Wooster St., has been making authentic New Haven coal-fired, brick-oven apizza since 1938, when it was founded by the late Salvatore Consiglio. It was run over the years by Sal, his wife, the late Flora Consiglio, and their children until being sold to investors in 2018.

Sally’s also has been featured in The New York Times, Washington Post, Eater’s “America’s 38 Essential Restaurants” and Barstool Pizza Reviews’ “Top New Haven Pizza,” among other accolades.
